Cruise lines offer optional shore excursions in each port of call. These are wonderful
programs for first time cruisers and those that are looking for the security of
a guided tour. Information on shore excursions can now be found online with the
cruise lines web site, as well as with your documents. Select the shore excursions
that interest you most and purchase your tickets as soon as possible, as some of
the more popular excursions sell out quickly especially those that include diving
and golf. Ship-sponsored shore excursions have a higher price, yet booking these
through the cruise line eliminates most of the risks including missing the ship's
departure from port! The captain will wait for one of the ship's excursion buses,
however you could watch the ship sail out to sea if you're late returning from your
self-directed excursion. Experienced or those who are adventurous may prefer to
make their own arrangements. Be observant to the traffic of that particular port,
so that you plan for enough time to return safely to your awaiting cruise ship.
Use common sense when setting out on your own. If your destination is within walking
distance of the ship, avoid shortcuts through deserted alleys.
Beside the cruise line there are also shore excursion companies that allow cruise
passengers to book their shore excursions in advance. The following are companies
who specialize in the pre-booking of shore excursions:
