Hubbard Glacier, a six mile block of ice is at the northern end of the Yakutat Bay and is estimated to be Alaska’s longest ice face. The giant glacier empties into the sea at Disenchantment Bay, the narrow inlet at the head of the Yakutat Bay. The greatest feature is its quick moving nature. About 12 years ago it moved to block the mouth of Russell Fjord, turning it into a lake and trapping hundreds of marine creatures inside. Some months later, the glacier receded.

Dress warmly and find your place at the ship’s rail. Be sure to get there early to view the day’s spectacular show. You will want to remember your camera and binoculars for this beautiful sight. Your ship will sail slowly through the iceberg waters toward the glaciers. The first glimpse of the color—glacial ice is incredible is an indescribable blue.
Most ships will lower a lifeboat to gather a small iceberg. It is then brought on board, and often used as a centerpiece for the evening’s midnight buffet or carved into an ice sculpture.
