Wellington is the capital located at the southern tip of the North Island. It is a cosmopolitan centre of government and commerce. Known for its winds, its winding streets, its clinging homes along the hillsides, and its well known harbour. Wellington's very compact downtown is surrounded by steep volcanic hills and overlooks a spectacular harbour. Wellington became the capital in 1865 when the seat of government was transferred from Auckland. Until the earthquake of 1855 most of the land now lying between Lambton Quay an the waterfront did not exist.

The harbor in Wellington originally controlled by the British, and named Port Nicholson. It was later renamed after the Duke of Wellington in 1839. The main governmental sector of New Zealand was stationed in Auckland until 1865, when it was relocated here, and Wellington has been the political center ever since.

The are many places of interest including the Parliament with its dynamic-shaped annex, The Beehive, the Victoria University and National Museum, the National Art Gallery and the old Government Building, one of the worlds oldest wooden buildings.

The Te Papa National Museum can be found at the harbor as well, and it is one of the city’s premier cultural sites.

Great views of the city are available from Mount Victoria or by taking the cable car to Kelburn. Oriental Bay is an attractive inner city beach just a few minutes walk from the central business drstrict
