Climate and current weather information for Lizard Island: The climate is tropical, with a summer wet season and a winter dry season. average year-round temperature of approximately 80°F/27°C Southeast trade winds at 15 to 25 knots are a consistent feature from March to September. In the later months of the year, winds become lighter and more variable in direction. During summer, strong northwesterly winds are interspersed with relatively calm intervals, and cyclones may occur between November and April. Lizard Island is large enough to provide a relatively sheltered lee shore in all but the most extreme weather conditions.
 
The northernmost resort of Australia's Great Barrier Reef islands is Lizard Island. Lizard Island is located 240 kilometres north of Cairns. It is a National Park that covers 1000 acres with more than 20 sandy beaches. Lizard Island hosts a diversity of landscapes, ranging from hills to rainforest. The magnificent coral reefs surround the coast. Lizard Island is one of the most beautiful cruise destinations in Australia. This island was named by Captain James Cook in 1770 when his ship, the Endeavour was caught in a reef. There he sighted many lizards along the shore. The area from which he discovered a passage through the reef is the highest point on the island, appropriately named Cooks Look at 1810 Feet high!

Lizard Island is renowned for its diving including the world famous 'Cod Hole'. Surrounded by fringing coral reefs, inner shelf, outer barrier or ribbon reefs and lagoon reefs, Lizard Island offers a number of outstanding coral gardens and many spectacular underwater attractions including more than 400 kinds of coral, over 1500 species of fish as well and giant clams over 120 years old.




Visitors to Lizard Island will find some of the best diving, snorkeling and fishing in the world. The larger cruise ships will anchor offshore and tender passengers ashore.

Marlin Fishing is quite popular and tourists are known to book a year ahead. The marlin fishing season goes from late September until early November, yet October is the busiest month of the year with up to 50 marlin boats in the harbour.

There are lush rainforests and wildflowers with powder white beaches and vividly bright coral gardens of the sea. Snorkeling and diving around this island is superb. A perfect spot to learn how to dive. The Cod Hole located on the outer reef is considered to be one of the world's most spectacular diving sites.

Marine Animal watching: Sea turtles and be seen on the reef. Countless species of tropical and marine life such as feather stars, sea pens and sponges abound the surrounding reefs. The reefs are protected within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Lizard Island is a photographers paradise. The island is surrounded by reef. It is part of the Great Barrier Reef National Park. The island gives you the opportunity to photograph tropical fish, colourful coral and tropical birdlife as well as various activities such as, snorkelling, kayaking, fishing, diving and much more.

Scuba Diving and snorkelling are popular activities that visitors participate in throughout the year. Organised trips can be arranged where qualified instructors are ready to teach you the basics on the island or out on the reef should you require assistance. You can then safely snorkel or try an introductory dive. Try the calm gardens in Watsons Bay, North Point or the Blue Lagoon for some great spots.

There are plenty of bushwalks and wildlife. A very popular track leads to Cook's Look, the peak on which Captain Cook stood to find the passage through the Great Barrier Reef.

The island gives you the opportunity to view tropical fish, birdlife and colourful coral as well as partaking in various activities such as snorkelling, windsurfing, canoeing, fishing, diving and much more
