Tallinn's old town is magically mystical, dating back to the medieval era and offering a genuine feeling of steping back-into-history. The old city is divided into two parts: the upper part known as the castle and the lower part consisting of shops and restaurants. The new town is very Scandinavian in architecture, yet holds less interest for cruise ship passengers and touritst.
Tallinn is Estonia's capital city also the most westernized of the Baltic states. Located approximately 53 miles from Helsinki and across the Gulf of Finland. Cruise passengers will find this town perfect for relaxing, enjoying the sidewalk cafes, shopping for a favorite handmade wool sweater or glass art.
The first recorded stronghold was built here by Estonians in the 10th century, and then taken over by the powerful seafaring Danes in 1219. In 1285, Tallinn was incorporated into the successful Hanseatic League which was a German mercantile group operating in northern Europe during the medieval times. In the last century, the people of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania endured Soviet rule for more than 50 years. In 1991 following the upheaval in the Soviet Union, these three countries proudly joined the world of independent nations and at last were able to celebrate their freedom.
