The French St. Martin shares this beautiful island with the Dutch St. Maarten. Cruise passengers will enjoy the rolling hills, fabulous beaches, dine dining, duty-free shopping, interesting historical sites, and casinos. This is the smallest island in the world to ever have been partitioned between two different nations, St. Martin & St. Maarten. The island has been shared by the French and the Dutch for almost 350 years. According to history, the boundaries were established in a walking contest in 1648. Columbus had discovered and named St. Martin in 1493. During the 1630's the French and Dutch both settled on the island. People cross back and forth across the border not even realizing they are entering a new country. The only marker is now a monument between Union Road and Bellevue, a sign of peaceful cohabitation.
St. Martin is mainly made up of rolling hills. The coastline offers deep coves and bays. There are approximately 36 beautiful beaches that encircle the island. Waters are generally clear, and offer snorkelers a paradise of brilliantly colored fish.
