For 1000 years St. Croix was inhabited by the Arawak Indians. Evidence (burial grounds) of their civilization have been found scatterred amongst the island.
Christopher Columbus arrived on St. Croix in 1493 and named the Island Santa Cruz. You can visit the location where Christopher Columbeus landed which is known as Salt River on the north shore of St Croix.
St. Croix was a center for sugar and cotton plantations. St. Croix still maintains much of its old world charm and preserved history.
