St Maarten, is one of three Windward Islands in the Netherlands Antilles. A geographic part of the Leeward Group of the Lesser Antilles. It occupies just one third of the island otherwise under French control. St Maarten occupies the southern area of wooded mountains and white sandy beaches. The most prominent feature in St Maarten is Mount Flagstaff, an extinct volcano. Excellent beaches follow the south and west coasts. Philipsburg, the capital separates Great Salt Pond from the ocean. The entire town consists of only two streets, Voorstraat (Front Street) and Achterstraat (Back Street).

All 10 miles of beaches are open to the public. Topless bathing is popular on the French Side. Baie Longue is one of the island’s best beaches which offers excellent snorkeling.
