Port: Old San Juan
Your ship will dock within a couple blocks of the main street.
One thing that Puerto Rico can truly offer, is diversity. One small island, 100 miles long and 35 miles wide, will show you thousands of years of history and four distinct cultures. San Juan is a modern and progressive and city that maintains the charm and hospitality of days gone by. You will find everything that the Caribbean has to offer in this popular cruise destination. Experience the warmth of not only the sunshine but the people as well.
Upon Christopher Columbus stepping ashore in Guánica in 1492 he encountered a flourishing Taíno culture. Within decades the Indians disappeared, but not before leaving their mark on the character that was soon to become Puerto Rican. The African slaves were replaced by the Indians as laborers.
Puerto Rico Culture depicts these three influences: Indian, African and Spanish. Other ethnic cultures add to the history of Puerto Rico including the Chinese workers, who built the railroads, the Spanish Loyalists fleeing the revolution in South America; the Corsicans who populated the coffee county out on the island; the French immigrants who came from Haiti and Louisiana; and a collection of Scots and Irish, as well as the North Americans following the Spanish American War.
