Newport, the port for Rhode Island located along the east coast of the USA and approximately 150 miles west of New York. This is a popular summer resort area and a well known yachting center. This was the site of the America's Cup Race from 1930 to 1983. Hosting a nautical flavor, Newport has a lovely waterfront that is a collection of boatyards, chandleries, marinas, and waterfront inns. You will find a collection of restored shops, and restaurants. This old town area features cobblestone streets lined with pastel colonial homes and shops.
This city was founded as a "new port" by the Antinomians in 1639. These were the religious refugees from Massachusetts Bay Colony. The city grew as a trade and shipbuilding center and a haven for Quakers. The Quakers arrived in 1657 along with the Sephardic Jews who arrived in 1658. The city is famous for its summer residences of the rich and famous that line Bellevue Avenue along with its jazz and folk music festivals.

St. Mary’s Church
Founded in 1828, this is the oldest Roman Catholic parish in Rhode Island. Most well known as the site of the 1953 wedding of Jacqueline Bouvier and John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

This is the oldest synagogue in the United States.
The Breakers
This is a national historic landmark. The grandest Newport mansion was this 70-room Italian Renaissance-style summer retreat of Cornelius Vanderbilt II’s family.
A scenic drive along Bellevue Avenue will take you past many of Newport’s most famous mansions.
Shopping
Antiques are popular in Newport. Maritime/nautical items are also quite popular, such as nautical maps, antique boat equipment, and nautcial themed artwork along with anything else relating to the sea. You wont want to pass up the maple favorites such as maple syrup, maple candies, and other tempting maple goodies. Take a stroll on Americas Cup Avenue that was restored, and is now a very popular mall.
