Cruise passengers will enjoy Norfolk, Virginia, situated at the mouth of the James, Elizabeth, and Nansemond rivers near the outlet of Chesapeake Bay on the Atlantic Ocean. Norfolk forms the port of Hampton Roads - one of the greatest natural harbors in the world. Norfolk is a major national seaport and an important military center, having the world's largest shipbuilding and repair center, the U.S. Navy's Atlantic Fleet, US Marine, Coast Guard, and NATO facilities, an Armed Forces Staff College and Langley Air Force Base with its astronaut training center. Norfolk is the site of the Chrysler Museum and the Mariners Museum, which features America's most extensive international collection of mariner's artifacts -- paintings, maps, scrimshaw, ship models, and unique watercraft. Nearby you can visit Colonial Williamsburg. The streets of the town were laid out in 1682. Its early growth was based on the West Indies trade and the shipping of products from the plantations of Virginia and North Carolina. During the American War of Independence every building except St Paul's Church (1739) was destroyed. Rebuilt after the war, Norfolk became an important shipbuilding and maritime center but its enormous military growth began during World War I.
