Nagasaki a very scenic town. Located on the west coast of Kyushu Island overlooking the Nagasaki Bay it is home to one of the best natural harbours in Japan. Once the Portuguese were expelled from Japan in 1638, the Dutch were the only foreigners permitted to stay on the tiny island of Dejima which is now connected to the city. On August 9, 1945, the United States Air Force plane released an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, destroying one-third of the city and injuring/killing some 66,000 people. The Atomic Bomb Museum shows the city before and after the explosion with a photographic series and first hand accounts of the blast.
