Sapporo, one of Japan's newest and largest cities is located on the south coast of Hokkaido Island at the entrance to Uchiura Bay. It was originally a small village and since 1900 it has grown to become an industrial port serving the cities of Hokkaido. it was even home to the winter Olympic games of 1972. Known for its fishing and forestry. Nearby is the Shikotsu-Toya National Park containing numerous volcanoes, crater lakes and hot springs resorts. The closest are Lake Toya, Japan's volcano Showa Shinzan and the extremely active Mount Usu. Hokkaido is the second largest island of the Japanese archipelago, and is situated between the Sea of Japan to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. The island is approximately about 280 miles wide and approximately 260 miles long with plenty of forestry. The island climate offers cool summers and severe winters.
Attractions

Tokei-dai
This clock tower was constructed in 1878 and has now become the symbol of Sapporo and a useful landmark for visitors. It's not particularly stunning, but for US$1 you can enter the building and wander around a small museum of local history. It's open daily (except Monday) from 9am to 5pm.

The Sapporo Beer Garden and Museum are on the site of the original Sapporo Brewery. Dating back to 1876, it was the first brewery to be established in Japan. Free tours of the museum, lasting on average just over an hour, are given throughout the year from 9am to 3.40pm (until 4.40pm from June to August). Be sure to ask for the English-language audiotape from the front desk.

Hokudai Shokubutsuen
This botanical garden and museum complex, run by Hokkaido University, has more than 5000 varieties of Hokkaido's flora on 14 hectares and is a relaxing spot for an afternoon nap. Near the main gate is a small Ainu (Japanese aboriginal people) museum with a good collection of Ainu tools, clothing, household utensils and ceremonial objects amassed by 19th-century Sapporo resident and Ainu researcher Rev John Batchelor. Admission to the garden is US$1. It's open daily from 9am to 4pm, except during October and early November when it closes at 3.30pm and on Monday. Between early November and April, only the greenhouse is open to visitors.
