Palma, the cosmopolitan capital of Majorca is the most popular and certainly the largest of the Balearic Islands. It is an exciting and colorful city, and keeps a balance between the traditional and the modern. Mallorca, an island of geographic diversity including approximately 3,500 miles of coastline, and alpine peaks. You will find the limestone caves with subterranean lakes breathtaking.
Palma is home to a host of bars, restaurants and trendy shops, Palma offers a shaded by palm tree seafront promenade and a very attractive Old Town. The skyline of the city is dominated by the Gothic Cathedral and the Bellver Castle. The Cathedral is located on the Mirador, it is a huge 13th century building that features beautiful stained glass windows. Across from the Cathedral on the site of the old Roman citadel is the Palacio Almudaina, residence of Moorish Kings and later followed by Kings of Majorca. Bellver Castle is just outside the city and shares with you views of medieval military architecture. Other attractions within the city include the 17th century Potella quarter, Pueblo Espanol and La Lonja, the 15th century Merchant's Exchange.
Outside of Palma lies Majorca's ever so dramatic mountain and coastal scenery, along with the setting of Valldemosa, the hillside village where the Carthusian monastery was home to Chopin and George Sand for a brief time. The Caves of Drach are 43 miles away and located on the opposite side of the island. There you will see the stalactite and stalagmite formations along with a large underground lake with a sound and light show.
Palma can best be seen at a walking pace. Cruise ship passengers enjoy walking around Palma de Majorca, the Capital city. Your cruise ship or the Tourism office can provide you with a map.

The Cathedral Commissioned by King Jaime I of Aragon in 1230. It is believed that on his way to recapture Mallorca from the Moors, his ship was struck by a terrible storm. He vowed at that moment to the Virgin Mary, that if he should survive he would build a church in her honor. The Cathedral was built yet not completed until 1601! Hours open are weekdays from 10 am - 12:30 pm and 4 pm - 6:30 pm as well as Saturdays from 10 am - 1:30 pm
The Bellver Castle A one of a kind round Gothic structure. Built as a sanitarium for King Jaime II duirng the 14th century, it offers great views of the city and bay.
Almudaina Palace The former residence of the Arab dynasty and now home to the Harbor Office of the Balearic Islands, a military headquarters. Guided tours only, weekdays 9:30 am - 1:30 pm and 4 - 6:30 pm as well as Saturdays 9:30 am - 1:30 pm.
Puerto de Palma Mallorca A lively mix of yachts, commercial freighters and cruise ships with nearby cafes just a stroll from the pier.
Other attractions you may find interesting are: The Arab Baths, the Town Hall and the more than 17 Art Galleries in the old town of Palma.
Shopping: There are many quality shops to choose from in this area. The shops close for afternoon siesta from 1:30 until around 5.00 pm. Take a relaxing walk down the Paseo Maritimo, the wide palm-lined boulevard that runs alongside the coast by the ports of where most ships enter. Shops in Palma feature local arts and crafts; pearls, jewelry, pottery, embroidery, and glasswork. Passeig des Born is a pedestrian avenue, lined with shops and restaurants, it's the place where you will find the locals who are out to see and be seen.
There are two covered Markets; Santa Catalina, the smaller one and the larger market is past Plaza Major, take the cobbled pedestrian walk and you will find it. A true flee market can be found in the area near Plaza Porta D'es Camp at the bottom end of the Avenida. You may easily get there by walking through Parc del Mar and then up the Avinguda. The best bargains can be found before 11:00am.
