Monaco on the Mediterranean Sea is one of the world's smallest countries and measures less than one square mile, with Monte Carlo its only city. Well known for its gambling casino, Monte Carlo is one of Europe's leading tourist resorts.
There is evidence of prehistoric settlements being discovered here. Later the Greeks and Romans established colonies here. During the early part of the fourteenth century, the Grimaldi family had purchased Monaco from the Genoans, and established a new government. The Grimaldi Dynasty has been in control of the 370 acres since 1297. France did manage to annex Monaco in the late 1700’s, however the Grimaldi family recovered rule in 1814.
Prince Rainier III is today's ruler of Monaco. His marriage to famous actress Grace Kelly in 1956 was an event known around the world and it elevated Monaco to a land of storybook romances. and a jolly ruler. The majority of the country’s economy is centered from gambling and tourism. The economy here is doing well, and Monaco has no income tax. Which is why many of the world’s wealthiest people call Monaco home.
Only the smaller ships can dock in Monte Carlo and other ships will tender their passengers ashore.

Be sure to see sights such as Palais du Prince and, the Grand Théâtre de Monte Carlo, which was an opera and ballet house, and the headquarters of the Ballets de Monte Carlo. The country first became popular after Grace Kelly married Prince Ranier III. Today this destination has become popular for its striking natural beauty. From Monte Carlo you can visit Eze, Antibes, St. Paul de Vence, the villas of Cap Ferrat and Beaulieu.
You will find the cafes are full all day with locals. There are lush parks that lead to the famous Casino, with beautiful fountains, statues, and lakes. Monaco is very well-organized. The second week in May is when Monaco is host to Le Grand Prix de Monaco. You will find the glamour and glitz of Monaco are just a 20-minute train ride from Nice.
The old town is the site of The Rock, where you will find the Cathedral, to which behind the altar is the burial place of Princess Grace. You will also find the royal houses, the gardens, and the Palace where a small changing of the guard ceremony is held every day at 11:55am. Also located on The Rock is the Musée de l’Océanographie. This is one of Europe’s best aquariums. It was administered by the late Jacques Cousteau, and offers a history of underwater exploration with exhibits of the early scuba gear worn along with a mockup of a submarine from the 1700s.
Beaches:
Larvotto Beach located not far from the ship and offers a nice beach for relaxation.
