As cruise passengers will discover Portofino, located on Italy's northern coast, is situated quite beautifully in a narrow cove at the southeastern tip of the promontory of the same name. In 1935 the city government of nearby Genoa declared Portofino a national monument so architecture has not changed very much in the past 60 years as changes must receive approval. The beautiful setting, climate and lush vegetation make Portofino popular. The locals thumb their noses at the tourists who invade this sleepy Italian Riviera town every day, all the earning their livelihood off the very same people whom they claim to despise. Outside of tourism, there is very little business in Portofino.

Portofino has been called the "Pearl of the Mediterranean" and has long been known as a rather exclusive gathering place for the wealthy, artists and actors. Visitors to Portofino cannot help but enjoy the great one of a kind ambiance, chic boutiques and quaint cafés that overlook the small yacht harbor. If you are looking more for a busy city then visit Genoa or only a short drive away is Rapallo and Santa Margherita. Do take the opportunity to sit at an outdoor cafe and people watching.
Scuba divers will enjoy an underwater world that can be rarely observed in other areas. You will see gorgonias, sponges, madrepores, prairies of posidonia oceanica and red coral. Due to the presence of the bronze statue of Cristo degli Abissi, the bay of San Fruttoso draws divers from all over the world.
Visit the Regional Nature Park that has a great concentrations of Mediterranean flowers, a great variety of birds and invertebrates and architectures. Visit the Park of Portofino which offers the typical view of the Ligurian coast that can be admired both from a naturalistic point of view and from a historical, artistic and anthropological one.
Some other things to do in Portofino: Take a walk, preferably before sunset, and head toward the tip of the peninsula. When you come to the entrance of an old castle (where a German baron once lived), step inside and take a look at the beautiful garden and the views of the town and harbor below. Keep going and you pass old private villas, towering trees, and much vegetation before you reach the lighthouse (faro). When you return to the main piazza, go have a drink in one of the two little bars, on the left side of the harbor. Before going to the lighthouse, however, go up the steps to the little parish church of San Giorgio, built on the site of a sanctuary that Roman soldiers dedicated to the Persian god Mithras.
