Interestingly enough Valencia is the name of the capital and of the state. The city is not lacking in historical sites and architectural beauties for visitors to see. The old district boasts the Cathedral, La Lonja, the Palace, and the ancient gates of the city. Valencia is situated on the eastern side of Spain near the mouth of the Tura River on the Mediterranean Sea. There is a fine art museum and an art school in the city and two gates from the 14th-century city walls built on Roman foundations.
It is hard to imagine that so long ago Valencia was established by the Greeks and later occupied by the Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs. It survived for over a century as the capital of a kingdom under James the Conqueror. Valencia is known for being involved in every war of Spain for the last 200 years. It defeated the French in 1808, in 1843 it fought to restore the monarchy of Maria Cristina of Naples, and in 1939, the Republican forces fled to Valencia after the fall of Catalonia.
