Progreso is a somewhat new cruise port option, especially for those smaller ships. It is the gateway to Merida, the state capital and the largest city in Southeastern Mexico. Merida is approximately 23 miles from Progreso. Here you will find the Mayan ruins as well as a 16th century colonial cathedral. The long pier has made Progreso a key shipping location for exports, making it the most important Yucatan port. Progresso offers a beautiful port with wonderful beaches, ideal for swimming, and sailing. The beaches in Progresso are nice and offer crystal clear waters. Located near Progreso you will find the Alacranes Reef and Perez Island. Two of the island's beaches are Chelem and Yucaltepen. From Progresso you also can visit Chichen Itza and the Uxmal Mayan Ruins.
For years the port of Progresso was just a sleepy fishing village. In the 1950s the Meridanos started building summer homes along the coast. For them it was refreshing to escape from the extreme heat of the tropical Merida, especially so during July and August. In the late 1960s Americans and Canadians discovered Progreso as a winter paradise. They were enticed by the warm weather, & low prices and the friendly Yucatecan people.
Attractions

Merida:
A major attraction for cruise ship passengers. Approximately a 30 minuted drive from Progreso. Modeled after the city of the same name in Spain. Merida was christened in 1542. Here you will find great examples of Spanish colonial architecture, along with a cathedral that was built in 1561, the Governor's Palace, and shopping within the city square.
Chichen Itza:
Popular, though this famous Mayan archaelogical site is at least 2 hours from Progreso. The site includes the Temple of Kukulkan, the Ceremonial Ball Court, the Well of Sacrifice, and the Observatory. You may choose to rent a car to provide full exploration opportunities.
xmal:
Closer to Progresom, only 90 minutes away, making it an easier tour of an archaeological site. Highlights will include the Pyramid of the Magician, the Palace of the Governor, and the House of the Turtles.
Uaymitun:
A wildlife and bird sanctuary that features plenty of birds and pink flamingos. You can explore this site at its best by rental car, or by kayak. Both offered as shore excursions.
Walking:
The pier operates a continuous free shuttle from the cruise ships into town. Progreso's town center is easily explored on foot
Snorkeling:
The crystal-clear waters of nearby Cenotes offers excellent snorkeling.
Beaches
Malecon Beach is really the best beach, with plenty of activities including banana boat rides, fishing excursions, volleyball, & kayaks. You will find lounge chairs, umbrellas, tables and chairs that are situated right on the sand. For beaches that are less crowded try Chicxulub, a particularly nice beach, or Uaymitun, San Benito, and San Bruno.
