Marmaris greets the Aegean, as well as the Mediterranean. Located along the Aegean coast at the center of a very scenic area of southern Turkey. At the head of a sparkling fjord, Marmaris is surrounded by pine covered hills with a backdrop of beautiful mountains. This is the perfect destinatior for sun-worshippers. Visitors will find coves and inlets for swimming, diving or fishing. The sheltered bay is a favorite for those looking to enjoy water sports and sailing. Along the palm tree lined promenade the Marmaris marina is a busy yachting center. Nature has provided Marmaris with a wonderful harbor with as many as 10,000 boats in the area during the summer. Visitors can find regular ferry boat services to Rhodes from Marmaris. Marmaris during the winter is a small fishing town, however in the summer Marmaris is an attractively popular tourist resort. Old Marmaris is clustered around an 11C AD Ottoman castle. Many of the houses have been restored to their original appearances.
Attractions that are well known and well enojoyed by cruise passengers is the 16th-century citadel, built by Suleyman the Magnificent, the Ottoman caravansary of 1545, and the Mosque of Ibrahim Agha. The Ataturk Park, on the eastern side of Marmaris should not be missed. .Marmaris today is a popular holiday resort with many scenic historic points, along with modern accommodation, restaurants, cafes, bars, and others. Beautiful boutiques, markets and bazaars provide great shopping opportunities.
Marmaris is an old town, and was once called Psykos. Marmaris has been ruled by the Egyptians, Syrians, Romans, Byzantines and the Ottomans. You can find traces of all these civilizations throughout the town. There are several buildings from the Ottoman period when the "new" town was built, including the castle that was built around 1523 by Süleyman the Great. Süleyman was not satisfied with the design of the new town and was said to express his anger with the words "Mirari as" (Hang the architect), which is how the name became Marmaris.

The Old Town: The castle, situated on a headland and east of yet behind this are the marina and the old town. Here you will notice narrow lanes with a number of bazaars where you can buy everything from spices to t-shirts to gold jewelery. This are plenty of restaurants or "lokantas", as the Turks call them, where you can eat fine cuisine at very affordable prices. For those that are overnighting in Marmaris, dont miss the famous Bar Street offering a good selection of bars and clubs that stay open almost 24 hours a day. Night life in Marmaris is quite lively!
Pamukkale: This is an extraordinary natural wonder. The calceous waters rise above from the ground at a temperature of 35 degrees C.
Dalyan Turtel Beach: Engage in a mud bath and see "the turtel beach". This is one of the few places in the Mediterranean where turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. This town has retained its Turkish character and is a popular holiday destination.
Dalyan is a truly beautifull place. Its discribed as being one of the last corners of paradise and i for one think they are spot on. Overlooking the village are the fantastic Lycian rock tombs of the once kings also the anchient city of Caunos and its ruined amphitheatre and mud baths. When you get to Dalyan you will need to hop on a boat this will take you on a 40 minute trip to Istuzu beach traveling through the huge reeds and passing by the rock tombs. Incidentally the film African Queen starring Humphry Boggart was filmed in these reeds. On the way you can visit the Llica mud baths, our kids loved this. These mud baths are supposed to keep you young looking
Daily BBQ Boat Trip: A mini cruise along the most beautiful coastline in the area. Upper sun deck as well as covered lower deck. Stops at 4-5 different coves where visitors can swim, and enjoy the cool sea. BBQ lunch is delicious and grilled for you while you're swimming in the clear blue warm waters. These boat trips operate daily. This is an all day excursion that departs in the morning and returns late afternoon.
Beaches: The beach begins west of the castle, and stretches for approximately 7 km towards Içmeler. The beach in Marmaris is relatively narrow, and made of gravel, smooth stones. The sand here is not as nice as the beach in Içmeler. There are however an unbelievable number of activities offered on the Marmaris beaches, including parasailing. If you want a beach with finer sand, take one of the boats from the harbour to Turunc or Kumlubüyök. A boat trip along the beautiful coastline is a suggested attraction as it provides an unmatchable experience.
Shopping: This is an experience in itself. You will find plenty of leather goods, gold, carpets and clothing all very reasonably priced. It is important to bargain, and expect at least one third off the original price. The bazaar is a must for visitors! Beware the shopkeepers who will try to entice you into their shops. This can get a little annoying.
Atlantis Aqua Park Aqua Park which has been open since August 1997, is a terrific day out for all ages. There is a large games arcade within complex and slides for both adults and children abound. Kamikaze: 80 % adrenalin, Wild River: don't go alone, Multi Slide: bump alone or hold hands with a friend, Splash Boat: as if rafting in a river, Super Slide: super long, Freefall: into water, Bumper Boats: navigate your own motorboat. The swimming pools have children sections and bars which are open every day, and there is a free Shuttle Service around Marmaris. The Atlantis Dance Bar directly on the beach, with the whole of Marmaris bay as a vista, is a great place to celebrate the tropical evenings whilst sipping on a tropical cocktail and dancing into the night.
