Climate and current weather information for Puerto Caldera: The climate is tropical. It is hot and humid year round with most of the rain falling between May and December. In the summer, you'll find sunny, warm days in the 80°F/26°C's, with temperatures dropping slightly in the evening. During the winter, the climate is at its best. It is common for dry and balmy days, with temperatures in the lower 80°F/26°C's and in the 60°F/16°C's at night. This is a year round good beach day port!
 
Cruise passengers, usually arrive here from other ports in Central America and find the difference remarkable and refreshing. Costa Rica is remarkably one of the most progressive and peaceful countries in that region.
Although the port offers some interesting attractions of its own, the majority of cruise passengers stop briefly and then move on quickly through town in tour buses and taxis, their minds fixed on the inland journey ahead of them.
Puerto Caldera, is located about 6 miles from the older port city of Puntarenas (which is an alternate port used sometime by cruise lines). Aside from walking pierside to do a little poking around among the vendors, you'll need to arrange a shore excursion or take a taxi.
Attractions

Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica's main cruise port, and serves as the gateway to the nation's varied interior. There are quite a few activities to enjoy on your stop here. Most of these activities are close by not directly in Puerto Caldera.
Puerto Caldera has limited shopping, dining, and activities. Most cruise ship passengers head for the hills of Costa Rica or San Jose.
Puntarenas
A larger, but much less attractive port is just minutes away by taxi. As in Puerto Caldera, tourist attractions are limited however this industrial town bustles with activity.
Coffee Plantations
From Costa Rica to your coffee cup…chances are, you've already sampled Costa Rican coffee back home. Buy it fresh here. Most plantations offer free sampling of their finest beans and brew.
Carara Biological Reserve
Two parks in one. The climates of the humid coastal shores and the drier, northern Pacific areas are both represented here, offering a huge variety of plants and animals in a relatively small. Marshlands feature wading birds, reptiles, water hyacinths, and floating aquatic plants. Inland are wild fig, silk, and yellow-flowering quamwood trees, and sloths, opossums, aouti, and white-tailed deer.
Poas Volcano National Park
A smoldering volcano is the main attraction. A hot water lake inhabits part of the 900-foot deep extinct volcano surrounded by trees dripping with parasitic plants and epiphytes (air plants). As with so much of Costa Rica, a varied habitats are featured within the park ranging from verdant to sparse.
