Manaus is a fascinating region of Brazil that is a must see for all nature enthusiasts. The city is set amongst the trees of the Brazilian Amazon, and dense jungle surrounds it on all sides. The Rio Negro lines Manaus, and this city is home to one million inhabitants. It is the Amazonas state capital, and a marvelous region to explore. You have likely never visited a city quite like Manaus. The Manao tribe named the city, which means Mother of the Gods.

Today Manaus is a modern, growing city, dominating Brazil's largest frontier. Before the rubber boom of the 19th century, Manaus was a small, insignificant town. With rubber came rich and splendid architectural accomplishments like the Amazonas Theater (completed in 1896 and restored in 1929) with its neoclassic faade and art nouveau interior including paintings by Capranesi and De Angelis. The green, yellow, blue and red dome is made up of tiles of tropical decor. Today, Manaus is a meeting point for people from all over the world.
International flights regularly service the city. Manaus has fine hotels and restaurants offering international cuisine and delightful local dishes. Shopping is another attraction in Manaus. Imported goods can be purchased in the Free Trade Zone. Local arts and crafts are also readily available throughout the area.

Manaus is the ideal point of departure for visiting the rest of the Amazon region. Tour boats leave Manaus for day trips to the meeting of waters where the black waters of the Negro River meet the lighter waters of the Solimões River flowing side by side without mixing for several miles.

Visitors can also explore river banks and "igarapés", swim and canoe in placid lakes, or simply walk in the lush forest. The more adventurous may even choose to spend a night or two in the jungle in close contact with nature.

The Meeting of the Waters
Where the dark waters of the Rio Negro join the lighter muddy waters of the Rio Solimoes a natural phenomenon is caused: the separate shades of water run side by side for a length of more than 4 mil/6 km without mixing. The separation is apparently caused by the difference in temperature, density and flow rate of the waters from each river: Rio Negro travels at about a mile 2km per hour with a temperature of 72ºF/22ºC while Rio Solimoes flows at between two and 4mil/6km per hour with a temperature of 82ºF/28ºC. This phenomenon has become a major tourist attraction in Brazil, best accessed by taking an hour’s journey by boat from the floating docks in Manaus.
