Buzios is about 110 miles to the east of Rio de Janeiro. Originally settled by European pirates and slave traders, this happy mixture of many bloods prospered and became a picturesque fishing village, elected one of the 10 most beautiful areas in the world, famous for its unique combination of rustic charm, architectural harmony, incredible beauty and sophisticated boutiques and restaurants frequented by discerning visitors who come from all over the world to savour its magic. It is on a peninsula extending into the Atlantic Ocean with 23 beaches. The beaches vary greatly from rough to gentle, busy to tranquil, warm to cool. The natural beauty began to attract the high society from Rio, who were seeking a calm place to build weekend houses, and the desire to be in Buzios increased rapidly. With the arrival of Brigitte Bardot in the 60's, Buzios, still a small and cozy resort, slowly turned into a tourist destination, famous worldwide.
Today Buzios is the meeting point for the Brazilians upper classes during holidays, as well as many foreign tourists. During the day the town is deserted as everyone heads for the many beaches to show off their suntanned body or eat the delicious seafood readily available. At night the town sparkles as all the beautiful people vie with each other for attention. The evening begins at ten and goes on to dawn, when the innumerable street-bars finally close their doors.
It's anyone's guess how small or sleepy the fishing town of Búzios truly was when French starlet Brigitte Bardot stumbled onto its sandy beaches in 1964, but it's certain that in the years since the little town used the publicity to turn itself into Rio's premier beach resort. In the summer the town is packed; many Carioca celebrities own places here, and Argentineans continue to invade with a gusto not seen since the Falklands. Despite the influx, the town has managed to retain a good deal of the charm of its fishing village past.Búzios (the town's full name is Armação de Búzios) sits on the tip of a long, beach-rich peninsula jutting out into the clear blue Atlantic. The sheer number of beaches close to town makes it easy to experience Brazilian beach culture firsthand. Geribá Beach is the place for surfing. Quiet and calm and very deep, Ferruda Beach is perfect for a lazy afternoon snorkel. Far from town are more isolated spots to steal a quiet moment with a special beach friend, while right in town on Ossos Beach you can sip a caipirinha at a beachside cafe and pretend for a moment you're young, rich, and beautiful. In this South American Saint-Tropez, everyone else certainly is.Finally, on top of serious inquisitions into beach culture, there are more trivial pursuits such as diving, sailing, windsurfing, fine cuisine, and endless opportunities to shop. And at night, everyone comes to the busy, bar- and cafe-lined Rua das Pedras to stroll, primp, drink, and party.
Attractions

Igreja de Sant'Anna:
Between Praia dos Ossos and Praia da Armação, the Sant'Anna Church was the first religious building in the town and is over 300 years old. From this location, visitors have one of the best views of the town. Legend has it that a statue of Sant’Anna (St. Anne) was found in the ocean by fishermen and placed in the chapel. The next day its position had changed by itself, now overlooking the sea. Behind the chapel is the Slave Cemetery, still in use today.
Diving in Buzios:
Close to shore, the good diving spots are the cliffs next to the beaches of João Fernandes and João Fernandinho, Lagoinha, Forno, Azeda and Azedinha - places for snorkeling and shallow dives.
Hitting The Buzios Beaches:
The charm of Búzios lies largely in its beaches, the 20 stretches of sand large and small within a few kilometers of the old town. Thanks to the irregular topography of this rugged little peninsula, each beach is set off from the other and has developed into own beach personality. Furthest from the old town is Manguinhos beach. Sheltered from the heavy surf, this gentle beach is where many learn to sail and windsurf. A short hop over the neck of the peninsula lies Geribá; beach, a wonderful long stretch of sand facing out towards the open ocean. This is the beach for surfing, boogie boarding, and windsurfing. Closer to town is Ferradura or Horseshoe beach. Nestled between rocky headlands in a beautiful horseshoe bay, this beach offers calm, crystal-clear waters, making it the perfect place for a long lazy afternoon's snorkel. Tiny and beautiful, Olho de Boi or Bull's Eye beach is tucked away on its own at the far end of a small ecological reserve. It can only be reached by a 20-minute walk from surfers' favorite Brava beach. Thanks to this isolation, Bull's Eye beach has been adopted by Búzios' clothing-optional crowd. Back on the calm inland side of the peninsula, João Fernandes Small beach with calm and crystal-clear water. Near the popular João Fernandes Beach with many bars where you can enjoy lobster and other great seafood. You can't miss it. João Fernandinho beaches are busy, happening places lined with beachside cafes and full of people intent on getting and showing off their tans.
The beaches on the east, on the Atlantic side, are windier with cooler water, ideal for sports, on the west offer calmer, warmer water, ideal for swimming and sun-bathing. Take the Búzios Trolley on a tour of the area, complete with a description of the peninsula's history and geography. Enjoy these photos and these, or these aerial views for tempting views of the area. Surf at Geribá Brava and Tucuns beaches. Dive, ride horses, trek, mountain bike, sail, play tennis or just laze on a beach. Stroll Rua da Pedras during the day and return at night for the nightlife that goes on into the wee hours.
