The city of Puerto Madryn is situated on the northeastern side of the province of Chubut. Puerto Madryn is located in the Golfo Nuevo and is the access point for Patagonia, a vast area covering a third of the country. Roughly 120 years ago the area around Puerto Madryn was settled by a group of Welsh immigrants. Although the town appears today unmistakably Argentine, Welsh customs are still evident.
The settlement here was subsidized by the Argentine government. These refugees from the Industrial Revolution settled in the nearby Chubut River Valley to build a new life for themselves. They named it Puerto Madryn after their Baron in Wales. The town almost disappeared in the 1970s as a result of industrial problems. Businesses began closing. However, the construction of an aluminum plant and a new improved tourist industry changed that.
