Fortaleza located in the northeastern coast of Brazil, the capital of the State of Ceara, is located approximately five hundred miles northwest of Recife. It is a very modern city which features surprisingly new architecture and beautiful beaches with tall coconut palm trees.
Cruise passengers will be fascinated to learn that the city's name, means "fortress," but that name is the only visible legacy in modern Fortaleza of its earlier very eventful history. In 1603, the first Portuguese arrived, and after confrontations with the Indians, they settled in the coastal area. After fighting between the Portuguese and locals they gained independence from Portugal. The city then became prosperous in the 19th century as a result of the expansion of ranching.
Today Fortaleza is a city of almost two million inhabitants, and is one of the main commercial centers of Brazil's northeast region. Despite its size, it is easy to maneuver around this city. The original street layout was designed by a French architect in the 19th century. The city fathers hoped to turn Fortaleza into "the Paris of the North." More recently, the city has tried to expand the tourist trade and to encourage the construction of luxury hotels along the city's beaches.
Attractions

While relaxing at the beach, visitors can see "jangadeiros" (fishermen) go out to sea in their "jangadas" (sailing rafts which are mainly used for fishing in this region). The beaches are beautiful and happens to be where most tourists spend much of their time when they visit this region.
While the fishermen are out to sea, their wives remain on shore and make beautiful delicate lace and embroidery for which Ceara is famous.
The José de Alencar Theater:
Located in the city, built in an art nouveau style.
The Ubajara National Park:
Comprised of 1,393 acres and located just a few hours from Fortaleza, on the border between the States of Ceará and Piauí.
There is plenty to do in the old center, where you can bargain for embroidery, lace and handicrafts in the market.
