French Polynesia is a dreamland, full of gorgeous beach locations, wonderful scuba diving, and great dining, all that you could ask for on your cruise vacation. Right in the heart of French Polynesia is the island of Tahaa, a place with one of the most beautiful lagoons in the entire world. Snorkeling in the lagoon is a must for visitors. Shopping and amenities are a little limited but the nature preserves, water sports, and restaurants make up for what it lacks. Nicknamed the “Vanilla Island,” more than 75% of the vanilla in all of French Polynesia comes from this island.
Enclosed in a common lagoon with Raiatea and accessible only by boat, Taha’a is located 120 miles (210 km) northwest of Tahiti, between Huahine and Bora Bora among the leeward Society Islands. Taha’a is the only island in the Society Islands that can be completely circled by ship inside the protected lagoon.
With its many deep bays and small deserted motu on the reef, Taha’a is an ideal island to escape the 20th century. Here you can explore the reef and discover the beauty of its multicolored lagoon, enjoy a picnic on a deserted motu or ride a 4X4 in the mountains and through the vanilla plantations and learn the mystery of these "orchids". Fishing is popular in Tahaa, and many of the locals are expert deep-sea fishermen. If you get lucky and strike up a conversation with the right person, you are likely to find yourself with an opportunity to fish off the sparkling shores of Tahaa.
Raiatea/Tahaa---the ancient cultural, religious and royal heart of Polynesia, Raiatea was, according to legend, the birthplace of the gods. From here the great canoes set out for Hawaii and New Zealand, entire tribes sailing off to colonize new shores. Long ago the people called the island Havai'i ("the homeland") and believed it was the place where spirits live on after death. And it is only here, on the slopes of sacred Mount Temehani, that one can glimpse the rare tiare apetahi, a flower found nowhere else on earth. Tahaa is so named for its numerous plantations of this fragrant plant, whose sweet aroma lingers in the air, seeping into every nook and cranny of the island.
