Suva, is the capital and primary port, that is located on the southeast shores of mountainous Viti Levu ("Great Fiji"). It is the largest of the over 800 islands which comprise the Republic of Fiji in the south Pacific Ocean. Tradition is very important to the natives. They still practice some of the traditional activities such as, like fire walks and welcoming ceremonies, wood-carving and the fabrication of tree-bark cloth.
Suva is a tropical haven, a place where you wish the day would go on forever. But after the sun sets the atmosphere changes to Suva at night. When the stars come out, the restaurants get hopping and the clubs get going and the partying begins. Suva is also arguably the most sophisticated city in the South Pacific. The town layout and the drivers are nothing short of mad so I would suggest the city is best explored on foot. Many walking tours are available with or without a guide.
The restaurants and myriad shops in Suva are fantastic, and you are given terrific options when it comes to eating out. Many of the stores sell jewelry and handicrafts from all over the South Pacific, and you are sure to find something great to take home to your family and friends.
Suva is not large per se, but it sure is trying. This bustling city has everything you could want in a modern cultural center, but has managed to keep its heritage alive through its wondrous architecture and the natural beauty of the land. The parks and beaches of Suva are lovely, and basically anywhere you go you will encounter one or the other. Suva encompasses ten square miles and is a hilly area full of life and wonder. The scenery along the coastal sections of the city is beautifully picturesque. In fact, you are sure to catch yourself gazing for minutes at a time, unaware that time is even passing at all. Today, people from all kinds of backgrounds live in harmony in this glorious portion of Fiji called Suva.

Suva allows for great outdoor sports adventures, and this is one of the premier places in the South Pacific for cruise vacationers to scuba dive and snorkel. Diving in the Beqa lagoon is an unforgettable experience. You will want to visit the nearby beaches, Southwich and Thurston Gardens.
Fiji Museum: A marvelous collection of displays, including remains of the H.M.S. Bounty that sank in 1789.
Suva Municipal Market This is a must see, the range of exotic fruits and vegetables is incredible. There is also a floor where tobacco and kava is sold in mass quantities. It is here you will likely be persuaded into trying a cup of the local elicacy. Kava is a slightly narcotic root so if you do indulge, don't be surprised if you feel slightly out of it. The market is the ideal place to catch a glimpse of the Fijian culture, the unique mix of Asian, French Polynesian and Malenesian that makes Fiji so appealing. Plenty of colorful Asian sweets, local produce and the odd handicraft can be found on the stalls. The market will take you to a different world - pure exotica at your fingertips. Cummings Street, made famous in the 1920s as the hot spot for saloons known as yaqona, it is a great place to head after sunset. For a great nightlife, Victoria Pde is the place, just ask any Suva student.
Colo-I-Suva Forest Park North of Suva is a place for great outdoor activities. Several excellent walking trails, three refreshing pools and ideal bird-watching grounds plus picnic and camping facilities are on offer at the park, a nice alternative to a day in the city. A local bus leaves every half hour for the park from the Suva station.Suva really has it all, seaside location, bustling nightlife, modern conveniences and friendly locals. If visiting the Fiji Islands get yourself to Suva, it's the best four letter word next to Bula!
Thurston Gardens: These cool tropical gardens are well landscaped and never crowded. Open all year round, with labelled fauna from Fiji and the South Pacific, the gardens are a lovely place to wander. Children will even enjoy the park with its colourfully painted sugar train, a relic from the times when sugar was harvested and crushed in Suva.
Old Parliament & Clock Tower: Weathered stone buildings with an impressive clock tower housed Parliament from 1939 to 1987. Statues of Fiji's two most important chiefs sit in front of the building and the famous clock tower can be seen and heard from the nearby vicinity.
Government Handcraft Centre: Traditional handcrafts can be found in this peaceful centre that is hidden on the corner of Carnavon Street and Victoria Parade. If you'd rather a haggle and a bargain and want to sift through the tourist trinkets, go to the Municipal Handicraft Centre between the Post Office and the sea wall.
Fiji Visitors Bureau: Centrally located, the Fiji Visitors Bureau resides in an elegant Victorian building. A tiny park outside is a place to sit and watch the crowds go by whilst you decide what to do next.
Cumming Street :What used to be the sight of the town market is now a narrow pillar lined street with small Indian owned shops. Here you can buy camera equipment, clothes and jewellery.
Flea Market: Opposite the bus stand, this indoor market has a fun atmosphere with cheap goods and food.
Municipal Market: Colorful fruits, vegetables, fish and seafood, the market is busiest Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
Orchid Island: Approximately 10 minutes from Suva center is Orchid Island. This cultural centre is small in size but offers a more personal (and cheaper) insight into the country's fauna, flora and history than the commercialized one at Pacific Harbour. Apart from being able to see the traditional tall spirit houses (bure kalou), visitors can see turtles, the rare iguanas, parrots, snakes and a selection of indigenous flora. Dance shows are held at times but the reliability of seeing one is not guaranteed in this laid back and friendly centre.
Colo-i-Suva Forest Park: This recreational area 18 km north of Suva gives a glimpse of the rainforest, views for miles and a break from the rush of life. The park offers marked trails that take hikers to natural swimming pools, waterfalls, vistas and through the dense jungle. The weather in this region is even wetter than Suva and adds to the mystique of the rainforest - so be prepared. A newly introduced fee (minimal) to enter the park goes towards its upkeep.
