Yangon (meaning the end of strife), was formerly Rangoon, and is the magical capital of ancient Burma, now known as Myanmar. The Burmese originally came to the region from Tibet during the 9th century. By the 11th century, a Buddhist monarchy ruled Burma, which was followed by the Chinese Mongols and the Shans. Following three consecutive wars, Britain then occupied Burma, and ruled it from the late 19th century until 1937 when it was declared an independent nation. Today the city of Yangon occupies the site of a 2,500-year-old settlement known as Okkala. The city's history revolves around the ancient Shwedagon Pagoda, dating back to the original settlement. Visitors to Rangoon are impressed by its historic preservation and the charm of the city, though tend to be most impressed by the golden pagoda, which is adorned with more than 5,400 diamonds and over 2,300 other precious stones.
