A hot, dirty, and noisy industrial city on Java's swampy northeast coast. Surabaya is East Java's biggest metropolis as well as its provincial capital with over 300 sq. km. Surabaya is the second largest city in the country, and a very modern center for manufacturing, agriculture, and trade.
The city is one of the most important commercial and trading centers in South East Asia. The harbor here is Indonesia's second largest after Jakarta. Most of the old harbor was in ruins after World War II, first destroyed by the Japanese upon capturing the city in 1942, followed by the allied forces. After the war the Indonesian nationalists then took control, followed by the Dutch for a limited period before the city became part of the Indonesian Republic in 1950.
