Indonesia, equaling the distance between Australia and Asia is home to almost 14,000 islands, many of those are uninhabited. The paradise of Indonesia is home to over 400 volcanoes, with almost 80 being still flowing. Known for its sunsets, beaches, almost perfect weather, and casual lifestyle, the South Pacific has been long enticing travelers to spend their vacation on its many sandy shores.

The islands east of Bali are known as Nusa Tenggara: There are about 566, and some are so small as to have no name. The capital of Alor, Kalabahi, is a quiet town at the head of a narrow bay, in many ways it is a typical tropical port, with its rusting merchant ships and wooden boats. Life revolves around the market, where women sell fruit and crafts products, such as bamboo mats, hand-woven fabrics, baskets in palm-leaves and objects in wood, such as the containers used to hold betel-nuts. The small island of Alor is situated east of Flores and is part of the volcanic belt which stretches from Sumatra, Java and Bali to the east of the Indonesian archipelago. Visitors arrive from Denpasar (Bali) via Kupang, the capital of West Timor. Alor is an island with a rocky, harsh landscape. It rains very little with only a few evening showers in the rainy season from December to March. A quiet town at the head of a narrow bay. A tropical port, with its rusting merchant ships and wooden boats. Life revolves around the market, where women sell fruit and crafts products. Alor is well off the normal tourist routes, mainly because it is difficult to reach the island. A very popular place for divers. Unfortunately most divers do not see anything from the fascinating interior of the island. There was still headhunting at the beginning of the 20th century and today the Alorese still live traditionally in high, airy thatched huts on the hill slopes.

There is no cheap diving in Alor because everything must be flown in and spare parts are not easy to get. However for all those who want to visit Flores and its eastern islands, Alor is a destination not to be missed.
